London has become the backdrop for a riveting trial as two teenagers, 18-year-old Arion Courtay and an unnamed 17-year-old, face charges of hacking into prominent companies such as NVIDIA, Rockstar, and Uber. The counts against them include serious computer misuse, blackmail, and fraud, with the prosecution suggesting their involvement in the notorious hacker group known as Lapsus$.
According to the prosecution, Arion Courtay and his alleged co-conspirators orchestrated hacks into the systems of Revolut, Uber, and Rockstar Games in September of last year. Remarkably, Courtay was already out on bail at the time, facing unrelated charges. The prosecution further alleges that Courtay, along with unidentified members of Lapsus$, stole commercial code and video content from the latest installment of the highly popular Grand Theft Auto game. It is claimed that Courtay assumed the guise of a contractor for the company, thereby facilitating the attempted hack and participating in a blackmail scheme with the hopes of obtaining a reward.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Arion Courtay has been deemed medically unfit to stand trial. Consequently, the jury will now determine his responsibility for the alleged crimes rather than his guilt. If found responsible, Courtay will avoid a prison sentence. The trial is expected to span eight weeks. On the other hand, Courtay’s 17-year-old accomplice has already pleaded guilty to some of the charges.
One notable count in the trial revolves around the joint hacking of NVIDIA. In February 2022, the two defendants gained unauthorized access to the accounts of two contractors, thereby obtaining highly confidential company data, including valuable software secrets. The hackers managed to pilfer nearly a terabyte of data from NVIDIA and made a portion of it public, threatening to release the remainder unless a ransom payment was made.
Prosecutors have revealed that law enforcement agencies were able to link the hacking activities to the two teenagers through various means, including IP addresses, emails, mobile devices, and Telegram accounts. Additionally, the defendants frequently boasted about their exploits online, leaving digital footprints that further incriminated them. Courtay, described as “highly competent and even brilliant,” apparently fell victim to the allure of teenage bravado, unable to resist the temptation to share his achievements with the world.
